What treatments are effective?

A review of treatment studies found that family therapy that focuses on the parents’ control of re-feeding appears to be effective in treating adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa (AN).

The same review reported that for those with Bulimia Nervosa (BN), 60 mg per day of fluoxetine given for 6 to 18 weeks reduces the binge eating and purging and related psychological symptoms in the short term.  It also found that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) administered either individually or in a group reduced the binge eating and purging in both short and long terms.
